The new eruption at Fagradalsfjall next to Litli Hrutur. is now in its third week and still going strong. Currently, the lava discharge continues from the only crater that remains from the original array of magma vents. The discharge varies between 8 to 10 cubic metres per second. The sizeable lava spatter cone contains a vigorous lava lake. Occasionally, the boiling lava manages to
breach the circular walls, sending a flash flood of lava onto the black lava flow that is now approaching an area of about 1.5 square kilometres and a volume of over 13 million cubic
metres. The lava flow is fed from the lake by active lava tubes that open up downstream to the south.
The hiking trail has been open for several days from early morning until 18:00 but the opening hours change due to wind direction, vegetation fires and other variables. Please follow the instructions at Safe Travel Iceland carefully.
We would like to suggest two possible tours to witness the eruption. The first option is a hiking tour with transportation provided by Reykjavik Excursions. The second option is a helicopter sightseeing flight with Atlantsflug.
